When a child is born into a family, there is a wave of
excitement that keeps the entire family cheerful. The happiness is infectious.
The baby is the centre of attraction. Every day starts and ends with the baby.
Some days don't even end when the baby decides to spoil everyone's sleep by
crying his heart out. Such a wave was in our family when Mr. and Mrs. Fernandes
had their first child - Ronald. Ronald is 13 now. About twelve years ago,
Ronald's typical day started off by crying. He might have felt like he has
arrived into a completely different universe when he woke up; or he might
probably be freaked out when he asked himself this simple question and failed
to answer it - Where was I until now?
Ronald was a healthy child and feeding him was never a
problem. While aunties in other houses would think of different ideas just get
a morsel through their little one's mouth, Fernandes aunty would finish off her
job sitting in one place because Ronald did not do any tantrums. He was a
bundle of entertainment. We were once sitting in our living room, listening to
some music when Ronald started tapping his lap with his tiny hands as if he was
enjoying and understanding every syllable of the sound. He would dance, sing
songs; all for nobody but just for himself. He would be busy doing something
all the time - opening toys, drawing on the walls, making Fernandes change his
diapers, pushing his tiny chair throughout the house were his favourite
pastimes.
One day, Ronald started crying and did not stop. "He didn’t
even eat properly today." a worried Mrs. Fernandes complained to my mom.
Everyone was tensed. I decided to skip college that day. We went to the doctor
and the doctor told that it was a viral infection. The doctor gave him an
injection and gave a bunch of pills to take. He said that Ronald had lack of
immunity. In spite of a good diet Ronald's immune system was not strong enough
to fight the infection. The doctor suggested Dabur Chyawanprash; not
to Ronald alone but to all of us to strengthen our body's immune system. It is
made out of Ayurvedic herbs so there is no fear of side-effects for kids like
Ronald.
We had never seen Ronald so quiet and sad. His eyes were wet
all the day and so were Mrs. Fernandes'. The house was quiet. Nobody was in a
mood to eat. I made some maggi gave it to Mrs. Fernandes and mom. Ronald fell asleep
due to a heavy dosage of pills. We all also got asleep due to a tiresome day.
After some time, Ronald started playing and singing with the toys kept around
him. His melodiously sweet songs woke us up. His songs made us so happy. Mrs. Fernandes
hugged him tight and let him continue playing with the toys.
A healthy house is always happy.
